The Maldivian Democratic Party has repeated concerns over the delay in deliberating in the Peoples Majlis, (parliament) of bills seen as crucial for holding free and fair elections in the run up to the country’s first multi-party elections.
Members are expected to begin debate in June on eight main bills in the Peoples Majlis (parliament, in recess till the end of May) that are essential to ensure free and fair elections, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Mr. Hassan Afeef said today. (more…)
Amendments to Constitution to be finalized by June 17 May, 2008

Amendments to the Constitution are expected to be finalized by June 2008, MDP parliamentary group leader Mr. Hassan Afeef said this week. Meeting officials of the Adhaalath Party last week Mr. Afeef noted he expects the finalized version of the amended Constitution to be forwarded to the President’s Office “by the end of the month”. Multi-party elections to be held before 10 October 2008 17 May, 2008

The Transition Chapter of the amended Constitution passed last month provides for the first ever multi-party presidential elections in Maldives to be held before 10 October 2008, and the new president to be installed on 11 November 2008.
Under the chapter the current president and his cabinet will remain in office until the newly elected president is sworn in. (more…)

The Drafting Panel of the Peoples Special Majlis (Constitutional Assembly) has proposed the interim period from 01April to 22 September 2008 for the transition to the Draft Constitution now in the final stages of completion. The proposal is being debated in Committee to set a table of activities for the interim period. (more…)
