MDP condemns Police ransacking of Party branch office 26 May, 2008

The Maldivian Democratic Party strongly condemns the Police ransacking the premises of MDP Branch Office in the island of Madaveli in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll.

On 19 May 2008 an investigating unit of six Police Officers stationed in Thinadhoo Island in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll came to Madaveli Island at midnight and ransacked the house Ran Avi, the premises of the MDP Branch Office in the island. (more…)

British MPs underline necessity of interim government, dropping of politically motivated charges 29 February, 2008

Sir Francis Maude and Mr. Richard Spring, Members of the British Parliament have said that it was important for the Maldives to have an Interim Government prior to Presidential Elections scheduled for later this year. The MP’s made the statement following a short visit to Male’ from 11to 13 February 2008. (more…)

Victims bemoan government misappropriation of tsunami aid 28 December, 2007

Three years since a tsunami devastated entire regions around the Indian Ocean internally displaced people by the disaster in the Maldives are still subsisting in temporary shelters card-board shacks and canvas tents.

Questions on government mishandling in the disbursement of millions of dollars of aid remain as the victims face a fourth year waiting to gain back their livelihoods. Despite commitments that the government made two years ago to establish measures to prevent corruption, it has paid scant attention to its implementation. (more…)
