NUA decides on how members will contest upcoming Presidential elections 26 May, 2008

Male’ 19 May 2008 – The participants of the National Unity Alliance, the Adhaalaath Party, the Social Liberal Party, the Islamic Democratic Party (IDP), the Maldives Reform Movement (formerly the New Maldives Movement), and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), agree that it is imperative for all participants to work together to achieve success in endeavors for instituting democracy and reform via the first multi-party Presidential election in Maldives.

The following matters are noted from the meetings of the National Unity Alliance pertaining to the nomination of a single candidate to contest the aforementioned election. 
 
1. The holding of a national primary election to designate a candidate representing the National Unity Alliance.
 
2.  That it was acceptable for as many candidates as possible to contest the first round of the Presidential election.
  
3. That the participants could not agree to proposed mechanisms for nominating a single candidate.
 
4. That the National Unity Alliance does not obstruct participants working together in contesting the Presidential election.
 
Therefore, the constituents of the National Unity Alliance agree that candidates from participants interested in competing in the first round of the aforementioned election should contest separately and the candidate from the constituents of the National Unity Alliance who garners the most votes in the first round shall become the candidate of the National Unity Alliance in the second round of the election.
