The Maldivian Democratic Party has repeated concerns over the delay in deliberating in the Peoples Majlis, (parliament) of bills seen as crucial for holding free and fair elections in the run up to the country’s first multi-party elections.
Members are expected to begin debate in June on eight main bills in the Peoples Majlis (parliament, in recess till the end of May) that are essential to ensure free and fair elections, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Mr. Hassan Afeef said today.
The Information Ministry stated last week that six of these bills are in the final stage of drafting. They are the Freedom of Expression Bill, Elections Commission Bill, Electoral Districts Bill, Presidential Elections Bill, Electoral Bill and Parliamentary Elections Bill.
Research required for drafting the Referendum Bill has been completed and the draft of the Political Parties Bill has been forwarded to stakeholders for comments, the Information Ministry stated last week.
The amended Constitution stipulates that the first multi-party presidential election in Maldives should be held before 10 October 2008.
