Mariya Ahmed Didi begins tenure as MDP Chairperson 17 May, 2008

Ms. Mariya Ahmed Didi has begun her tenure as MDP Chairperson from 12 March 2008.
Ms. Didi who is also MP for Male’ (Kaafu) Atoll won the election securing 80% of the vote in a two-candidate race. The position of Chairperson became vacant when her predecessor Mr. Mohamed Nasheed resigned from the post to participate in the presidential primary held on the same day.
Speaking at press briefing last week Ms. Didi said changes will be necessary to the structure of the party due to the adoption of the presidential system of government by the people. She also pledged improvements at the MDP national secretariat.
On 08 March 2007 Ms. Mariya Ahmed Didi was recognized by the US State Department for promoting women’s rights.
